Thomas & Vaughan Marechal Foch 2002
VQA Ontario $14.95
(LCBO Vintages Only- February 2005- Product Code:585968) |
|
Hybrids like Marechal Foch are often sneered at, but in the right hands, like Thomas & Vaughan's Jason James, they can produce marvelous wines. The inky magenta colour of this one gets you first, then it¹s the smoky, gamey nose of fresh, ripe berries. Next you get a rich, smooth, mouth-filling experience of fresh berries and cherries, with a dash of beet juice, a half-grind of fresh pepper, a pinch of spice, and a whiff of smoke‹all wrapped around a spine of clean acidity. Over the top as a description? Try a bottle. It’s only the grape variety that keeps the price this low. (Rod Phillips)

89.5/100 2000 Chardonnay Vintners Select
You won't get Chardonnay this good, this cheap unless you
hold up the liquor store. (This is not a directive). Buttery,
utterly loverly.

Vintners 2000 CABERNET FRANC |
|
An attractive offering with
vanilla, cassis and pepper notes. Flavours of rich red berry with a touch
of sweet oak give the wine an added texture. A lighter style with some
acidity and youthful tannins. Best paired with white meats such as lamb.

Vintners 2000 LATE HARVEST VIDAL |
|
Soft notes of caramel,
pineapple and peach. Light and crisp with a racy steak that runs through
the core of the wine. Intense flavours coat the palate with a thin layer
of residual sugar. A balanced late harvest that could be served as a
mid dinner break between entrees.

Vintners 2000 MERLOT ESTATE RESERVE |
|
Floral, mint and chocolate
come drifting out of the glass. Meaty and
rich, there's a textured earthiness to the palate. Intense and
extracted, the tannins are tight, but the flavours manage to follow through
to the finish. Shows great promise after a few years.

Vintners 2001 OFF-DRY RIESLING |
|
Peach aromas and ripe peach
flavours present themselves, mingled with
some citrus and dusty nutty notes, in this pleasantly quaffable wine.
Flavourful and concentrated, this is a crowd-pleasing sipper

Vintners 2001 VIDAL SEMI-SWEET |
|
A typical Niagara Vidal
with lush lemon, pear and green apple characteristics. The fruit explodes on
the palate with a touch of sweetness up front. More citrus flavours follow
through to the finish. Nice undertones of pineapple round out a
well-made wine. Best enjoyed lounging around on a Sunday afternoon.
